Re: Home-made SSI chips

That should be fun :-)
Reinventing the transistor :-)

One another scale I, sometime build some kindof chip myself, I'm not a pro, but I find useful to build some stuff into block.
Per exemple, a simple RC circuit build on a IC socket so it can be use on different kind of prototype board ...
;o)

I was wondering what would it take to make my own SSI chips?

Of course I'm not talking about 90 nM resolution.. but something
like 0.1 millimeters (at best). I have a 2400˛dpi laser printer.

How does one make a transistor? Is this technology reachable from
the (enthusiast) hobbyst? Where could I find the necessary materials?

The above link describes a college freshman lab where they do exactly what
you want. As far as I can tell, it hasn't changed much since I took it over
20 years ago. Well, we only tried to get a few transistors on a chip, and
maybe they try for more now, but maybe not.

One thing you will need, not usually found in home labs, are tube furnaces
that go to 1000C or so. They probably aren't so hard to find in laboratory
surplus places, so you could probably buy some for reasonable prices.

The lab notebook link seems to be only available to caltech people. If you
ask nice, they might let you read it.
