The 196 is a 16 bit register-register architecture. IIRC the opcodes allowed 256 register-pages. The 196 is still in production, but never made it into FLASH process, so is not 'for new designs' The slightly later, and 'similar market space' Infineon C166 family did make it into FLASH. -jg
