For embedded design (GUI) where high availability is crucial :
- Windows CE : this is the fourth major release, what's next ? :-(
- Linux embedded : open source can be a good choice.
- QNX + Photon app builder : not so expensive, and very reliable. You can
  download a free evaluation CDROM at www.qnx.com
- VxWorks + Tilcon : a bit more expensive, but very common RTOS
- eCos : it's free ?

What kind of CPU : x86 only, or real embedded processor (ARM/PPC/XScale) ?
