There are lots of areas where we could use assistance. One of the best ways is via testing. Gnumeric has a strong base set of test workbooks to validate our analytics. However, I'd like to expand that to make the testing alot more exaustive. Have a look at the function status page at www.gnumeric.org for details. We've received funding from Mitch Kapor (of lotus 1-2-3 fame) to fund some bounties to develop these sort of tests. I'll announce details some time in December. It would not be huge amounts of money, approximately 50 USD/workbook. However, it would be a great way for spreadsheet _users_ to make a contribution and ensure that the numbers they see are the numbers they expect.
