Re: numbering cell names in Excel



(Using Excel97) Try:

Set a cell value ending in a number, e.g., "Dog1".

Select a series of adjoining cells starting with the "Dog1" cell.

Edit->Fill->Series
Select "Series in" Rows or Columns, as appropriate
Select Step Value 1
Select "AutoFill"
Select OK

Get "Dog1" Dog2", etc. in the selected cells.

Note: This only seems to work if all the adjoining cells except the first
("Dog1")
are initially empty. Non-empty cells appear to disrupt the auto-fill series
values.
