Hi, you need to make sure nothing follows the item Dog1 such as Dog1 spaniel - this will prevent the incrementing from happening. If you only have Dog1 in a cell and it is still not working, try the drag with the control key pressed. This normally would prevent the incrementing, but on some systems it seems to be the reverse - which version of Excel are you using?
