Is Clara OCR dead?

Is Clara OCR not being developed further?  I can't find the mailing lists or
source code on the host website (see http://www.claraocr.org/).  Attempts to
contact the claraocr-announce or the claraocr-devel lists
([EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] respectively) bounce.  A number of the
RPMs at the various Mandrake-related URLs fail because the paths at the
hosting sites have changed since this webpage was made.

If Clara is dead, are there any other Free Software OCR programs one would
recommend?  I wish to OCR newspaper clippings and academic papers.
