Thanks, that's the point I was hoping to make. I'm afraid my 'Catcher' example was poorly chosen, and I ended up analysing it at a lower level than I would have liked. There ought to be a general term for self-referential passages in books, where the book itself is alluded to. This is common in non-fiction, and especially in introductions (which the opening of Catcher resembled). More subtle are asides like 'to make a long story short'.
