University of Sussex, UK, within the EASy (Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems) group. We have around 40 students each year taking the 1-year EASy MSc, and around 50% of these go on to do doctoral research in (broadly) Alife areas, both here and elsewhere.

Currently we have around 30 doctoral students in Alife-related areas. We have far too many applicants, so it is difficult to get accepted. Here a doctoral program usually has no taught component - a prior MSc or equivalent is expected to cover that. The doctoral program is *research* so we look for strong novel research proposals within the the areas of interest of faculty who would supervise. Some prior training/experience at putting together a viable research proposal is usually necessary before applying to do a doctorate here.
