CHART: End of year charts - 1996

PREAMBLE:
1996 was definitely the year of the Macarena. It's a dance craze that
has swept the world and set the charts on fire with many different
versions being released by numerous artists based on the original
Bayside Boys Mix by Los Del Rio. Australians enjoyed an unusual
situation in which the two most popular versions, the Los Del
Rio Bayside Boys Mix and the version by Los Del Mar featuring Pedro
Castano both charted well. They charted so well that at once stage,
Los Del Rio was at number one and in the same week Los Del Mar
was at number two! Both singles sold enough to make it into
the top 15 sellers of the year, but you'll just have to wait
and see the official chart below to see just exactly how well
    they both did!

1996 was definitely NOT the year for Australian artists on the charts.
With just FOUR out of the top 50 singles originating from Australia
and New Zeland, it is a far cry from the local success of artists
in the early 1990's as shown in the table below.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
Year Number of Aus/NZ artists in the end of year top 50
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    1989 11 singles
    1990 11 singles
    1991 9 singles
    1992 15 singles
    1993 3 singles
    1994 3 singles
    1995 8 singles
    1996 4 singles
    -----------------------------------------------------------

Ironically, 1996 was a year in which Australian artists had their
biggest year of sales overseas. O.M.C. did huge business overseas,
with HOW BIZARRE topping charts in Europe after doing the same in
Australia. Brisbane's Peter Andre took the U.K. by storm,
sending ONLY YOU to number 16, MYSTERIOUS GIRL to number 2,
and then scored two number ones in a row with FLAVA and
I FEEL YOU. Interestingly enough, Peter Andre's biggest
hit in Australia from his current album was GET DOWN ON IT,
and that has not even been released overseas. Peter's
success was not just confined to the U.K. MYSTERIOUS GIRL and
FLAVA were huge hits across the rest of Europe too. Melbourne's
Tina Arena scored a string of hits off her DON'T ASK album
in the U.K., with the highlight being the top 10 success of
the single CHAINS. That single also made the top 40 in the
United States and was very successful in many countries around
the world. Brisbane singer, Gina G (Gina Gardiner) headed
off to the U.K. a couple of years ago to try to get her music
career on track. Within a short time, her debut single "JUST A
LITTLE BIT" was Britain's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest,
and despite not winning that competition, did huge business
on the charts here in Australia and Europe. Lastly, we cannot
forget Melbourne's Merril Bainbridge. In October 1994, her
debut and self-penned single MOUTH was released in Australia.
It got lost in the Christmas music madness, so it was
re-relased in early 1995. It ended up spending 6 weeks
at number one, and was the 4th biggest selling single in Australia
for that year. Late this year, MOUTH was released in the U.S.
It re-wrote chart history as Merril Bainbridge peaked at
number 4 in the United States - the biggest success by an
Australian artist in the U.S. since the days of INXS and AC/DC
back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. MOUTH also topped the
charts in Canada. Luckily her single did get re-released in
Australia otherwise none of this would have ever happened!

While it is an achievement for an artist to get a single in the end of
year top 50, three artists this year had two singles within the top
    50. Celine Dion's IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO ME NOW ended the year
at number 42, while BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME was the 3rd biggest selling
single of the year in Australia. Mid-way during the chart run of
BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME, the single was re-packaged with the bonus track
THE POWER OF THE DREAM, a song that Celine performed at the 1996
Atlanta Olympic Games. This was enough to send BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME
on a U-turn back up the charts, and the repackaged single ended
up spending 3 weeks at number one. La Bouche had four charting
singles in Australia in 1996, and the first two of them, BE MY LOVER
and SWEET DREAMS were both successful enough to make it into the
top 50 sellers of 1996. Lastly, Shaggy's BOOMBASTIC and his
guest appearance on Maxi Priest's THAT GIRL ensured he had two
of the 50 biggest sellers of the year, making 1996 his most
    successful year yet in Australia.

Now, time to get into a few statistics then the chart we have
    been waiting all year for...
