by di-ve.com Northern Ireland: Malta 2003 Tuesday, 02 December, 2003 The Up Close festival which featured music, theatre, literature and visual arts from Northern Ireland in Malta now concludes with A MUSIC PARTY - Performance by The Brian Irvine Ensemble, Northern Ireland. "A wild phenomenon from Belfast that has taken everyone by surprise?a stunningly original composer who conducts like a pugilistic windmill; a 14 piece band whose formidable discipline and blowing ability is masked by collective lunacy." Bath Festival, 2000 A spectacle hovering between pantomime & performance art, where genius blends with fun & folly...... Brian Irvine.....together with his own 14 piece ensemble which features the internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Paul Dunmall, who has performed at many contemporary music/jazz festivals including Bath, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, Stirling, Utrecht, as well as the Comedie de Valence in France with many future performances scheduled throughout Europe and the USA. Recently the ensemble's performance at the Bath Festival was recorded and broadcast on Jazz on 3 BBC Radio 3. His compositions reflect an interest in various and opposing musical genres from minimalism and jazz to thrash metal and 20th century classical music. In performance, the band manages to fuse together intricate compositions with fiery improvisations in performances that are characterised by their energy, virtuosity and humour. Irvine's debut album Bersudsky's Machines, a collection of compositions based on Eduard Bersudsky's kinetic sculptures has received widespread critical acclaim. The BRIAN IRVINE ENSEMBLE will be in Malta for ONE performance only...Don't miss it!!
