Announcing Famoudou Konate's May-June 2004 Workshop Tour

FK2K4: FAMOUDOU KONATE NORTH AMERICA MINI-CAMP WORKSHOP TOUR
May 23-June 30, 2004
Djembe & Dundun Drumming From The Malinke-Hamana Of Guinea, West Africa
http://www.chidjembe.com/fkusahome.html

The Chicago Djembe Project is pleased to announce planning for Malinke
Master Drummer Famoudou Konate's fourth year of workshops in North America.

Building on the highly successful workshops in Chicago, Maine, Oregon and
Toronto from 2000 to 2003, Konate will lead Mini-Camps in 2004 in Chicago
and up to 4 other cities. Mini-Camps are 3 to 5 days of intensive 4-hour
workshops (one per day) which give dedicated students of the African djembe
drum at all levels an immersion in the music of the traditional Malinke
djembe orchestra.

The tour will kick off in Chicago on Memorial Day Weekend, then head for
both the east and west coasts, with specific dates and other locations to be
announced soon. Toronto and Portland, Oregon are also tentatively slated to
return as tour cities in 2004.

Although local sponsor slots are filling up fast, we're still interested in
hearing from you if you'd like to sponsor a Famoudou Konate mini-camp in
your city. Contact CDP at the address below and we'll send you complete tour
planning information. We plan to have a confirmed slate of tour cities in
place by mid-January, so act now.

And if you're a djembe student, start making plans to be part of the 2004
Mini-Camps. Don't miss the chance to study intensively with a preeminent
figure in worldwide djembe culture and one of the few, true masters of The
Malinke Djembe Tradition. Students in the first 3 years of Famoudou's North
American workshops were taken on a unique journey into Malinke culture which
left them informed, enthralled and inspired. Get on our mailing list for all
the FK2K4 updates and to find out about the workshops closest to you.

Visit the Famoudou Konate North American Website for more information. We've
just redesigned and updated the website with the FK2K4 details as well as a
comprehensive FK discography/bibliography/videography and new photos
throughout. You'll find it all starting at...

ABOUT FAMOUDOU KONATE:

Famoudou Konate is, according to the British World Music Publication
"Songlines," "the djembe world's best-kept secret." He is one of only a
handful of Initiated Masters of the Malinke Djembe Tradition. Recruited into
Guinea's Les Ballets Africains in 1959, he was lead djembe drummer for Les
Ballets from 1959 until 1985, performing with astounding virtuosity and
creating many of the djembe arrangements now common in ballets and
performance groups world-wide.

Among Guinean drummers, he is universally recognized for his unsurpassed
knowledge of the djembe repertoire of the Malinke people, the creators of
the djembe and its core tradition. Since 1986, he has instilled a generation
of European djembe drummers with an extraordinary level of training, while
teaching with thoroughness, patience and humor. His pioneering contributions
were recognized in 1996 with an Honorary Professorship in African Musical
Education and Practice from the Academy of Arts in Berlin. He has taught
annually in North America since 2000.
